Why gray?

"Yeah, well you know gray is my favorite color. I felt so symbolic yesterday."

~"Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows

Not so long ago, gray made me uneasy. Gray, to me, was dreary and blurry and uncertain. I disliked it so much, I declared I'd never even wear anything gray again.

As I heal from childhood trauma and a disordered self-image, I am discovering I have used black-and-white thinking as a defense mechanism all my life. All or nothing. Always and never. Extreme reactions to everyday stressors. Inflexible rule setting and following. I am learning that living in these extremes is not healthy or authentic.

In my self-reflection, I'm trading polarization for moderation. All of a sudden, gray is attractive. Serenity resides in The Gray Area. Real life happens in The Gray Area. The Gray Area is healthy, relaxing, freeing. It is subtle, nuanced and rich.

On your journey of self-improvement, I invite you to join me in learning to reject black-and-white thinking and find serenity in The Gray Area.
